"Baobab Tree"

Baobab web

2009

Oil on Canvas

This is a big art work that took many hours in painting but even more in pondering. It's important to understand the context...

 PAINTING 1 - Left.

The Bushman legend says: "The baobab was among the first trees to appear on the land. Next came the slender, graceful palm tree. When the baobab saw the palm tree, it cried out that it wanted to be taller. Then the beautiful flame tree appeared with its pretty red flowers and the baobab was envious of its flower blossoms. When the baobab saw the magnificent fig tree, it prayed and begged for fruit as well.

The gods became angry with the tree and pulled it up by its roots, then replanted it upside down to keep it quiet."

End of the bushman legend, the moral: Be content with what you have, don't complain or might be punished.

however I think diffirently...

PAINTING 2 - Middle.

I relate to the Boabab, also known as the “upside down tree”.

When my world went upside down I also initially thought "I'm being punished".

I tried many things in an attempt to re invent myself, the roots symbolize this attempt, I had to make it work, get air!

Few plans succeeded, and the situation felt like a heavy burden to carry… In the cloud I painted a man picking up a huge rock, a symbol of the tough time.

I get a Paradigm shift, an awakening, “Maybe I am the root and not the tree”.

PAINTING 3 – Right.

What I thought was the tree in the beginning is now the root and what I thought was the root now is the tree, a paradigm shift of huge proportions, further more the tree has fruit and beautiful blossoms, what it complained about it recieved, not because it complained but dispite it's complaining. - I am this tree.

I am also known as “the tree of life”by locals who live in this hot and dry climate around me, it is because you can drink and eat of me, I have water reserves, I give shelter and I make good rope.I’m not slim like the palm tree but who cares – I am majestic.

I’ve got roots that are strong and deep! That’s what’s important.

What I thought was punishment has become a prerequisite  to being a tree of life. What I saw as punishment was design.

my new perception warms me, I have purpose, I have love. Even in seemingly ‘bad’ situations, Good is always there, we just fail to see it so often.

Sometimes our own memories and/or perceptions  let’s our “inner judge” declare “this is wrong, this is punishment!” - NOT SO!
